LA FERIA - Construction on two storm shelters designed to withstand hurricane winds is nearing completion.
The first one is a 20,000-sf shelter at 1700 S. Main St. The other is 15,000 sf near the city recreation center on Pancho Maples Dr.
The domed structures on South Main St. and Pancho Maples Dr. are being built to stand up to 200 mph winds.
Construction is expected to be completed in about three months, City Manager Sunny Philip said.
The larger shelter will hold 800 people while the other will hold 600 in case of disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes.
Officials plan to use the 20,000-sf shelter as an events center and the other as a wellness facility.
