DALLAS - The 4400 block of South Lancaster Road has a new look and outlook. With $30 million, a publicly funded mix of apartments, retail and office space is fueling hope and creating pride in an area short on accolades.

Lancaster Urban Village has opened 193 apartments in South Dallas. The property has 23 floor plans. It offers efficiencies, as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom units in the 4400 block of South Lancaster Rd.

Rent starts at $564 for an efficiency; $693 for a one-bedroom; $943 for a two-bedroom; and $1,223 for a three-bedroom unit.

Market rental rates will apply to 93 of the apartments, with the rest reserved for limited-income residents. Leasing began in late May, and move-ins continue.

Lancaster Urban Village currently has 19 tenants. Along with the luxury of having a private pool, private backyard options and a fitness center, the complex maintains close proximity to a DART train station.

City Wide Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization, developed the complex.

The development is located on Lancaster Rd., across the street from the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The community hopes to begin working with the hospital to offer long-term housing for families or patients.

Also a part of Lancaster Urban Village is a 50,000-sf expansion of the Urban League of Greater Dallas & North Texas where trade skills and workforce development classes will be offered.
