SAN ANTONIO - Southton Rail Yard, which opened six months ago to serve the Eagle Ford Shale, is already undergoing its first expansion.

The 300-acre rail transloading operation, located at Loop 410 South and I-37, is adding 6,000 feet of rail to its existing 25,000. It is also installing six new storage silos to supply sand energy-industry customers use during the hydraulic fracturing process that unleashes oil and gas from the shale.

Further expansion could be in Southton’s near future if the site lands two new tenants interested in taking truck shipments of Eagle Ford crude oil for transport to refining centers via rail.

Booming South Texas production has taxed pipeline infrastructure, requiring oil companies to transport much of their output by train.
