ELMENDORF, BEXAR COUNTY - The City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and the Texas Water Development Board have broken ground on what will become the largest inland desalination plant in the country.

Once the local desalination plant is completed and operational in 2016, SAWS will be able to pump salt water from the Wilcox Aquifer and treat it to produce 12 million gallon of drinking water per day. This will be enough water to serve an additional 40,000 families in the SAWS service area.

SAWS will expand the plant in phases in 2021 and 2026. Once fully built-out, the desalination plant will produce 30 million gallons of water per day.

The cost for phase one on the project will be $192.7 million. The price tag for the total project will be $411 million.
