MORRIS COUNTY, PANOLA COUNTY - Walmart is thinking small in East Texas. The company has rolled out plans for several of its smallest-format stores — called Walmart Express — in small towns around East Texas.

The 1,400-resident City of Naples has approved a zoning change for the Express store, which will be on US 67. The store will be about 11,000 sf, and the company expects the store to open later in 2014.

The City of Lone Star, which has about 1,600 residents, has approved plans for an approximately 12,000-sf store on Main St. with groceries, a deli, fuel and possibly a pharmacy — which the town currently does not have. The company has indicated it expects to start construction in July, and be finished by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

In 1,385-resident Tatum, the city has approved the necessary zoning changes for a store on SH 149, but plans for the Walmart Express are still in the preliminary stages.
