WACO - Work has begun on an additional 24 units to give Cameron Heights total of 50 units. The rental homes will range in rent from $935 to $1,800 a month.

Cameron Heights is a residential neighborhood near downtown with 20 units designated for lease. The $6 million gated community exists between North Fourth St. and North Fifth St., stretching toward Waco Dr.

Preparation has started on Cottages at Cameron Heights, a new subdivision at Bosque Blvd. and North Fifth St.. The homes will be priced from $130,000 to $180,000, according to developer Steve Sorrells,

“Our intention is to build three speculative homes at a time, but we will pick up the pace if people begin to prepay for custom homes,” Sorrells said. Construction on the first three homes likely will begin in 60 to 90 days.

About 1,000 multifamily units have arisen in the downtown area in recent years, and they typically stay 95 to 98 percent occupied, said Chris McGowan, director of urban development for the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce.
