RIO GRANDE VALLEY - In Weslaco, the 41,000-sf Walmart Neighborhood Market, located at 1600 South Texas Blvd., has opened its doors. The estimated cost of construction was nearly $2.2 million, according to state filings.

“The new store will create at least 60 new jobs in the community…and also revitalize and bring foot traffic to an area that was not commercialized before,” said Joey Treviño, Weslaco Economic Development Chief.

The Neighborhood Market is a concept that Walmart bills as a traditional grocery store at one-fifth the size of a Walmart Supercenter.

McAllen's second neighborhood market is slated to be completed on the northeast corner of North 23rd St. and West Dove Ave. by October 2014.

Mission’s neighborhood market is also slated to be completed in spring 2015 at the intersection of Bryan Rd. and Hwy. 83

In addition to the neighborhood markets, there are recently-minted supercenters in Edinburg, Hidalgo, and Elsa with more to break ground in Donna and Los Fresnos over the next year.
