Laredo opens $3.9M Aircraft Rescue and Fire Station
LAREDO – The Laredo International Airport and the City of Laredo have opened a new $3.9 million, 15,400-sf state-of-the-art Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Station situated on two acres.
The building is located immediately east of Taxiway J at the intersection with Taxiway D at the airport, and encompasses three tandem drive-through apparatus bays and one maintenance bay, supported by a room.
The private staff area has six shared sleeping rooms, a laundry room and exercise room. Operations spaces include two staff offices, watch/alarm and conference room, kitchen/dining room, with rooms for I.T., mechanical and electrical equipment.
A grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar secured a $4.1 million grant for the project, which required a 10 percent match by the City of Laredo.
“The new ARFF will help to elevate our airport to the leading facility in South Texas, able to provide not only the services for passenger and cargo travel, but also, be able to respond quickly and with the necessary equipment and support, should it be necessary,” said Carlos Villarreal, City Manager of Laredo.
