BROWNSVILLE - The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) is partnering with Charles Sturt University in Australia to offer a four-course, graduate-level customs and international trade certification program at UTB starting in January 2015.

The plan is for the program to be followed by master’s level course in Customs Management within the next 18 months.

Ultimately, accreditation of the program would be approved by the World Customs Organization (WCO), according to Tom Coyle, the UTB assistant professor instrumental in setting up the program.

No higher education institution in the Americas is involved with a program of this nature.

Six universities in the world have customs-related programs accredited by the WCO, while Sturt University is the world’s leader in the discipline.

“The thing about customs and compliance management is, since we’ll be the only school in the Americas (teaching it), there is not a lot of curriculum developed. There are not a lot of faculty trained to do this. This is really a brand new academic endeavor,” said Coyle.

The UTB (ultimately, The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley) courses would be taught online and via video conferencing.
