WASKOM, HARRISON COUNTY - Construction has begun on a 22,000-sf Walmart Neighborhood Market at 1005 Texas Ave. on the left side of Devon Energy and across from Azz Galvanizing.

The Neighborhood Market will offer a full grocery department with a bakery and deli, health and beauty items, baby and pet supplies, select household merchandise and a full-service pharmacy. The store also will have fuel pumps on site.

The Waskom Walmart Neighborhood Market is expected to employ up to 30 associates. Walmart employs more associates in Texas than any other state with an average hourly state wage of $12.46, according to Anne Hatfield, director of communications for Walmart public affairs and government relations.

Besides Waskom, Naples, Tatum and Lone Star are among the East Texas towns that could see construction starting soon on smaller Walmart Neighborhood Markets, previously called “Express stores.”

Walmart opened a Neighborhood Market in Longview on Gilmer Rd. earlier this month, part of its plan to open between 270 and 300 small-format stores nationally this year.
