WACO – Gander Mountain has opened its 52,000-sf emporium for fishing, hunting and camping equipment as well as name-brand apparel and footwear.

The Minnesota-based chain has focused on the Texas market in recent years and welcomed the opportunity to place a store at I-35 and South Valley Mills Dr., where it will anchor an 18-acre development where the old University High School was demolished.

Gander Mountain serves as the centerpiece of a development that Dallas-based Leon Capital Group has undertaken. It will be joined there by a 107-room Home2 Suites by Hilton that McNeil Commercial Real Estate is building.

Officials with Leon Capital Group have remained tight-lipped about other attractions planned for the development, but a site plan submitted to the City of Waco planning department shows funds earmarked for other retail developments.
