HARKER HEIGHTS - The new $9.3 million, 50,000-sf Central Texas Armed Services YMCA’s community building has broken ground at 100 Mountain Lion Rd.

The YMCA entered into a ground lease with the City of Harker Heights in 2013 to construct the facility on about two acres in the northeast corner of Purser Family Park.

Seton Medical Center Harker Heights, which contributed $2 million to the facility, will provide cardio and rehabilitation for soldiers through a healing pool within the facility.

Killeen Independent School District also gave $2 million so that students will be able to utilize a ten-lane pool for swim lessons, according to ASYMCA Chairman Larry Linder.

In addition to the pools, developers plan to include a gymnasium, exercise studio, family adventure center, nursery, climbing tower, locker rooms, a wellness center, cardio center and cafe, said John Marshall, YMCA program center director.

The YMCA is expected to serve more than 15,000 people and will be the first off-post Armed Services YMCA in the country.
