BIG COUNTRY - Walmart is about to have a bigger footprint in the Big Country with two cities getting larger stores and four communities opening Walmart Neighborhood Markets within the next few months.
In Stamford, a new 70,000-sf Walmart has opened its doors at 1608 N. Swenson St.
In Breckenridge another 70,000-sf Walmart will open in November 2014, replacing a 49,000-sf store. The Breckenridge supercenter will also have a small convenience-style store with gas pumps.
Other communities will see 12,000-sf Neighborhood Markets, reflecting a national trend for many new Walmart locations.
Neighborhood Markets in the Big Country are expected to open in the following areas:
• Anson — November 2014,
• Winters — December 2014,
• Merkel — January 2015, and
• Haskell — late January to early February 2015.
Walmart will hire approximately 30 associates to work at the new Walmart Neighborhood Market slated to open this fall in Anson.
The four locations will have identical formats, said Max Powell, manager of the Merkel store. They will each have a pharmacy and a complete grocery line, along with selected Walmart merchandise.
Each will also have a fuel station, where patrons can either pay at the pump or pay inside the store. The stores will be open 24 hours.
