EL PASO – Whole Foods will open a 45,000-sf supermarket in West El Paso by the end of 2016. The store will be part of a small shopping center at Mesa St. and Pitt St., across from Coronado High School. The store will employ about 100 people.

Whole Foods is a high-end retailer that might help attract other upscale retailers to El Paso.

"At the end of the day, it depends on how successful they are," he said. "El Paso has to support it to attract other high-end retailers," said Rick Amstater, partner in RJL Real Estate Consultants.

Sprouts Farmers Market has operated El Paso’s only large, natural foods supermarket for years, also on the West Side. In January 2013, it relocated from 6100 N. Mesa to a larger building at 655 Sunland Park.

El Paso is one of 12 new store locations in ten states announced by the company. Whole Foods added 38 new stores in the past 12 months, and now operates 401 stores in the United States, Canada, and England. It had record sales of $14.2 billion in its 2014 fiscal year.
