Construction takes off on United’s $20M automated baggage facility
HOUSTON – United Airlines is moving ahead with the next phase of a $300 million effort to upgrade its baggage-handling system at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
This phase will bring a $20 million building that will serve as a repository for bags checked by passengers who arrive early. It will feature automated bag rerouting, energy-efficient control systems, and an intelligent software interface.
The 73,435-sf facility will be at 3575 S. Terminal Rd., near Terminal C.
Hensel Phelps is overseeing construction of the building and surrounding infrastructure. Siemens Logistics is handling construction of the automated system.
The building was designed by PGAL and will deliver in November 2020.
