AUSTIN – The city council has approved plans to transform the Rodeway Inn motel at 2711 S. I-35 into a homeless shelter.
The city will spend $8 million to acquire and renovate the building. Austin's Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) will then lease the motel and fund the cost of operating the shelter.
Offering shelter for 80 people, the shelter will have service providers like psychiatrists and substance abuse counselors.
ECHO hopes to turn the motel into permanent supportive housing.
