CORPUS CHRISTI – The city is tearing down and replacing the nearly 50-year-old Cole Park Pier.

According to an engineering study, most of the 450-ft pier's structural integrity has been compromised by corrosion. It has been closed for more than a year, and part of the pier collapsed in April.

Repairs would cost $7.1 million, as opposed to replacement, which will cost $4.1 million.

The design will be ready by next summer, and construction will be completed by February 2021.

The money will come from a 2018 bond and seawall sales tax funds. The voter-approved bond will supply about $1 million with the rest to come from taxes, the community enrichment fund, and possible grants for which the city has applied.
