SAN ANTONIO – The local government and CPS Energy are set to introduce “smart” street lights to the city.

Once installed, the lights will illuminate city streets, sense flooding patterns, measure air quality, check temperatures, and seek out available parking spots.

Three vendors will submit bids this month to test the technology in three innovation zones: Brooks, downtown, and South Texas Medical Center.

Contractors will test the equipment for three months, then the city will evaluate the results and decide whether to issue a call for bids on a citywide project.

The pilot program sensors will be added as early as fall 2019.
