KILLEEN - Employment in Killeen is growing at an annual rate of 2 percent, placing the area among the top job growth areas in the state.

According to the Texas A&M Real Estate Center’s Monthly Review of the Texas Economy, the Killeen-Fort Hood area also is contributing twice the employment growth to the state since last year and is now ranked 15th in employment growth among Texas cities, with a growth rate of 1.9 percent since last year.

Jerry Haisler, director of Workforce Solutions of Central Texas, said construction — including the Texas Department of Transportation’s project on US 190 — health care and overall population growth has contributed to Killeen-Fort Hood’s employment growth.

According to a study conducted by Economic Modeling Specialists International for the Killeen-Fort Hood area, the government sector is by far the largest portion of jobs with 37,229, followed by health care and social assistance with 19,999 jobs, then retail trade with 16,279 jobs for an average income of some $48,000.
