SAN ANTONIO – State officials plan to build a new $320 million San Antonio State Hospital at its existing site at 6711 S. New Braunfels Ave.
The updated 296-bed hospital calls for grouping patients into smaller units, separated by open-air courtyards that let in natural light and allow patients to go outside.
The current facility has buildings that date back to 1892, and an analysis in 2014 determined 80 percent of the structures were in critical condition.
Construction is set to start next year with doors opening in 2023.
The project is part of the state's plan to update nearly half of its ten aging psychiatric hospitals and accommodate growing patient demand.
