DFW apartment building declines, second in nation | DFW apartment building declines, second in nation | https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/news/newstalk-texas/?Item=20664 | 2018-07-20T05:00:00Z | 2018-07-20T22:45:00Z | DFW – North Texas apartment building activity is down a tad so far this year, but the 1.5 percent decline in apartment-building permits couldn't knock the metro off its perch as one of the country's busiest apartment-building markets.
According to new data from RealPage, 20,191 multifamily homebuilding permits were recorded in the Dallas area during the 12-month period ending in May 2018, second only to New York City.
With the huge number of new rental units hitting the market in the last few years, rents in the area are barely rising, and in some DFW neighborhoods, apartment rents are actually falling.
At midyear 2018, Dallas-Fort Worth apartment rents were up only 1 percent from a year earlier.
Nationwide, apartment building activity was up more than 9 percent in May 2018 from a year earlier.
