AUSTIN – The University of Texas System jumped to No. 3 in the world among universities granted U.S. patents in 2017.
That is five spots higher than the system ranked in 2016, according to the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2017 granted 219 utility patents to the UT System, which has 14 campuses, including medical institutions.
Utility patents cover inventions that create or improve products, processes and machines and represent 90 percent of all patents issued in the country.
They require authorization for non-patent holders to make, use or sell the invention.
