Image of the Houston Ship Channel HOUSTON – The Harris County Toll Road Authority has begun a $962 million project to replace the bridge over the Houston Ship Channel to handle growing traffic.

When complete in 2024, Houston Ship Channel Bridge will have two bridges with four lanes of traffic.

The new bridges will be 1,320 feet with pylons, or towers connecting the suspension cables that hold the 500 foot tall deck.

The existing bridge, which was the longest of its kind in the U.S. when built, carries about 55,000 cars per day, but that number is expected to grow to almost 158,000 vehicles by 2035.
