​​​​​HOUSTON – Although the local economy slowed significantly in 2015 and remained weak through 2017, the demand for consumer products continues to spur growth in the industrial sector​.

​​According to Colliers International, ​​​​​​​​​​developers have constructed 2.1 million sf of industrial space in first quarter 2018. Over 9.2 million sf is still in the pipeline.

Vacancy increased ten basis points over the quarter to 5.3 percent, matching the first quarter 2017 rate. ​​​Over 1.5 million sf of the metro's industrial inventory was absorbed during first quarter 2018, the report said. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the MSA created 67,100 jobs (not seasonally adjusted) between February 2017 and February 2018, an annual growth rate of 2.2 percent, above the national rate of 1.6 percent.​​
