​​​​​MIDLAND – According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, t​he city is tied for the fifth-lowest jobless rate in the nation in January​​​.

The city’s 2.4 percent unemployment rate tied the area with Elkhart-Goshen, IL​​​.

Amarillo (2.8 percent) is the only other Texas city among the top 25 MSAs with the lowest unemployment rates in the country. 

The rest of the top five are:

  • Ames, Iowa, 1.8 percent;

  • Honolulu, ​Hawaii, 2 percent;

  • Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina, Hawaii, 2.1 percent; and​

  • Madison, WI, 2.4 percent. ​

Wisconsin had the most cities with jobless rates in the top 25. Hawaii posted the lowest unemployment ​rate in January at 2.1 percent. Texas’ was 4.2 percent.
