AUSTIN – Ashbel Smith Hall, a nine-story University of Texas System building, is coming down after 40 years.

The former headquarters of the UT System’s governing board will be imploded.

Ashbel Smith Hall sits on the south side of West Seventh St. at 601 Colorado St.

Now under the name “Block 71,” a developer plans a 36-story, 670,000-sf building in its place with offices, restaurants, retail space and a gym.

The building will also have 1,500 parking spaces across 17 floors, five of which will be underground.
