CHARLOTTE, N.C. – LendingTree has ranked the best and worst cities for first-time homebuyers, and five Texas cities ranked in the bottom half.

Austin ranked 97th, making it the fourth worst city on the list and the worst in Texas.

Dallas and Houston also had low markets, landing 77th and 78th, respectively. San Antonio ranked 71st, and El Paso was 51st.

McAllen fared better than the rest of the state, ranking 19th.

Little Rock, Ark. was deemed the best city for first-time homebuyers. Denver was the worst.

To compile the list, LendingTree looked at the average down payment amount and percentage; the share of buyers using an FHA mortgage; the percentage of buyers with sub-prime credit (below 680); the share of homes sold that the median income family can afford; and the average FHA down payment as a percentage of average down payment for all loans.
