The project will raise the Astrodome floor 30 feet to ground level, creating over 550,000 sf of rentable space plus room for 1,400 parking spaces. The raised floor would create nearly eight acres of column-free, weatherproofed open space. Construction will begin later this year. Of the $105 million cost to renovate the dome into convention and meeting space, about a third will come from the county's general fund, largely made up of property tax revenue. Hotel occupancy taxes and parking revenue will also pay for the project. The dome project comes more than four years after Harris County voters rejected a $217 million bond proposal that would have paid for massive renovations to the 53-year-old structure. The Texas Historical Commission voted in January 2017 to designate the Astrodome a state antiquities landmark, giving the stadium special protections against demolition.
