Next-gen renovation: $105M to Houston's AstrodomeNext-gen renovation: $105M to Houston's Astrodomehttps://www.recenter.tamu.edu/news/newstalk-texas/?Item=191502018-02-15T06:00:00Z2018-02-15T21:50:00Z

An exterior view to the Astrodome in Houston.HOUSTON – A project to renovate the Astrodome into a usable facility has taken a major step forward.

The project would raise the Astrodome floor 30 feet to ground level, creating more than 500,000 sf of rentable space, as well as 1,400 parking spaces.

The raised floor would create nearly eight acres of column-free and weatherproofed open space that could be used by more than 100 festivals and events.

The Harris County Commissioners Court approved a recommendation to proceed with the project, the last major approval needed.

This phase of the project is not to exceed $105 million, according to the court's February 13, 2018 meeting agenda.

No more than $35 million of the cost would come from the county’s general fund.

The remaining $70 million would come from hotel-occupancy tax revenue and Harris County’s parking revenue.

The Houston Chronicle reports that construction could begin in 2018.
