​​The Aztec Building in San Benito.SAN BENITO, CAMERON COUNTY – The City of San Benito is creating a cultural district as it works to become a tourist destination.

The cultural district will showcase the city’s rich history as a 1900s’ agricultural hub and as the birthplace of conjunto music.

The district will feature the new San Benito Cultural Heritage Center, the Community Building and the old public library.

The $1.7 heritage center is expected to open summer 2018.

The district will also include the historic Aztec Building.

​The city plans to renovate parts of the building at 402 W Robertson St. which has been leased to Niños Head Start for many years.
