An image of a frac sand mine and processing plant. POTEET, ATASCOSA COUNTY – Pennsylvania-based Preferred Sands LLC is investing $100 million in a new mine being developed off SH 16.

The 4,000-acre property, located just north of Poteet, holds an estimated 202 million tons of mineable sand, and will eventually employ 100 full-time employees.

Crews are currently installing processing equipment to have the facility operational by January 2018.

Sand will be mined, washed, cleaned, dried and sold on site; the mine is believed to have enough sand to last more than 67 years.

As part of the company’s expansion in the Eagle Ford Shale and Permian Basin, Preferred Sands is simultaneously developing the Poteet site and another one near the Ward County town of Monahans.
