First in nation; magnet school earns Labor certification
SAN ANTONIO – After an 18-month process, the U.S. Department of Labor recognized San Antonio’s Construction Careers Academy (CCA) as an approved apprenticeship program.
CCA is the first school in the United States to have an approved apprenticeship program recognized by the Department of Labor.
The typical student can expect to leave CCA with close to 1,000 apprenticeship hours, which can be used towards the required 8,000 hours of job experience needed to become a journeyman, according to Krista Ackles, student project manager and academic coach.
Through a four-year tract, students earn a high school diploma, apprenticeship hours, industry certification and a ten-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration certification.
CCA is a Northside Independent School District magnet school.
