NEW BRAUNFELS – Comal County will soon get a new jail and an upgraded sheriff's office.
Construction documents show an estimated $63 million project to renovate the current Comal County sheriff's office at 3005 W. San Antonio St. in New Braunfels.
The project will remove the interior jail and replace it with additional rooms and offices.
The old jail will be replaced by a new $53 million building, which will sit on an 11.6-acre lot behind the current site.
According to Comal County Engineer Tom Hornseth, the new facility will have 589 beds and space to increase to 900 beds.
The current jail's capacity is 300 beds.
The project will break ground later this year and should be finished by spring 2020.
