Rodeo ready! Hotels saddling up in San Angelo
SAN ANGELO – As the beat of heavy hooves heads into town, hoteliers are fluffing pillows for two-legged visitors for the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo. The rodeo is slated for Feb. 13 – March 1, 2015.
The rush has been on for hotels to take advantage of the $2.4 million visitors spend each year during the several weeks of the stock show and rodeo.
Candlewood Suites held its grand opening in January to an 83-room project. It is located at Loop 306 and Southwest Blvd.
Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham is among several hotels that opened in San Angelo in 2014.The extended-stay hotel is at Sherwood Way and Farm-to-Market Rd. 2288, across from Chick-fil-A and near Walmart.
Some hotels remodeled rather than starting from the ground up, such as Quality Inn on Jackson St. west of U.S. Hwy. 87. The property was remodeled and updated with new furniture, beds, carpets, wallpaper and bathrooms, and it reopened two weeks ago.
East of downtown on the river lies The Pearl on the Concho, a historic hotel being refurbished to its former glory as the Holiday Inn Holidome. Its first set of rooms is opening just in time for the rodeo.
Pearl on the Concho looks to a full opening of its lodging, convention and meeting rooms, restaurant and saloon in late March or early April.
The Courtyard by Marriott, in the cluster of construction at Southwest and the loop, anticipates an April opening date.
With a total of 534 additional rooms expected to be added to the city in 2015, other hotels in the works include:
• Residence Inn by Marriott at the former Graham Central Station site, at Southwest and the loop, expected to open in April.
• Home 2 Suites, also in the hotel district, planned to open in May.
• Wingate by Wyndham, near Angelo State University, on South Jackson St. behind Twin Peaks restaurant, projected to open in July.
This year’s rates range from $80–$180.
