The company was attracted to the 120-room Staybridge Suites, at 9000 S. Main St., due to its proximity to the Texas Medical Center (TMC).

Other companies also plan to build new hotels in the TMC area:

  • Lubbock-based Pearl Hospitality plans to break ground on an Embassy Suites adjacent to the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center towers by the end of 2017.
  • Houston-based Moody National Cos. is developing a 182-key Residence Inn at 7807 Kirby Dr., just up the street from Midas’ Staybridge Suites.
  • U.K.-based InterContinental Hotels Group PLC will open its 21-story, 353-room Intercontinental Houston Medical Center in late 2018.

In addition, Texas Medical Center is working its own hotel, which is expected to open in 2020 as the first piece of the planned TMC3 campus, a 30-acre district focused around life science and health care commercialization.
