TEXAS – Paint? Clean? Unpack? Shop? Meet the Neighbors?
None of the above!
Patricia Feager, a real estate agent with Dallas Fine Properties, says that when you first move you should become familiar with your home and know your grounds.
Get Familiar
- If you have small children, keep your children safe. Are the doors locked and secure and did you change the locks?
- Spend quality time with small children before the movers get there and teach children what they need to do and explain what they need to know.
- Do not rely on previous home inspection reports, this is your home and you need to get familiar with all its quirks.
- Take every measure to promote safety for all family members, including the elderly.
Know Your Grounds—Safety First!
- Do you know where the water shut off valves are located?
- Where is the power to the Electrical Box?
- Where is the nearest drug store? Medical Facility? Grocery Store?
- Do you have fresh smoke detector batteries and light bulbs?
- What local numbers do you need to post and will everyone know what to do in case of an emergency?
- If your area has tornado warnings and sirens go off, would you know what to do?
- Do you have a First Aid Kit and fire extinguisher?
A house was not built in one day for a reason—practice safety from the start!
