DALLAS – More than $1.5 billion in nonresidential building projects were begun in the area last month, according to a new report by Dodge Data & Analytics. That's almost three times more than a year ago.

The strong April commercial building total pushed commercial construction for the year up 6 percent from the first five months of 2016.

Residential building fell 6 percent last month from a year ago. It's down 7 percent so far this year.

DFW had $21 billion in construction activity last year, putting it behind only New York City.
