​​​EL PASO – The upcoming construction on Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso campus​ is an $83 million research lab and classroom building.

Construction of the five-story, 219,000-sf Medical Sciences Building II is expected to begin May 15, 2017 and be completed in spring 2019.

The growing campus is improving El Paso's health care and helping to create "high-quality, high-paying health care jobs, ....," said Rick Francis, chairman of the Texas Tech University System board of regents.

It will cost around $62 million for Sundt Construction to build the facility.

​About $19 million will be used to pay for equipment, furnishings and construction-development costs, said Michael Molina, vice chancellor for facilities for the Texas Tech system. 

The state Legislature appropriated $75 million for the building, and the Texas Tech El Paso school is paying $8 million.
