COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp spoke as demolition began on the first of 35 existing structures set to be cleared on the RELLIS Campus.

Officials are preparing to begin several new construction projects at the 2,000-acre site.
A&M System officials said many of structures targeted for demolition on the 2,000-acre campus are "decaying warehouses" that will be replaced with academic and research and development facilities over the next few years.
Not all of the older structures on the campus are set to be torn down, however.
Officials said facilities such as the chapel, flight tower, hangers and water tower that remain from the campus’ days as the former Bryan Air Base will be preserved.
