EDINBURG – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials broke ground on a new driver’s license facility in north Edinburg.

The new "mega center" is going to be a 25,000-sf facility, located at the corner of Hwy. 281 and Davis Rd.

The new center will open in late 2017 with 12 operational workstations as well as separate space for 30 patrol officers.

The project was $5.4 million for construction, of that amount $2.5 million was secured by the Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee.

Edinburg Economic Development Corporation also had incentives to pay the firm for up to 68 employees.

The new facility will be located on what the mayor called the "public safety corridor."

This includes the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, a new Edinburg Fire Station that is in the works, and the South Texas International Airport at Edinburg.
