LAREDO – Crowds of eager shoppers attended the first day of business at the 358,000-sf The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo at 1600 Water St.

The retail space is split between four colorful two-story buildings and a total of 52 stores, nine kiosks and the food court, which officially opened March 16, 2017.

Built along the Rio Grande and in the footprint of the old River Drive Mall in downtown Laredo, the outlet mall provides underground parking as well as an indoor and outdoor shopping experience.

Laredo Assistant City Manager Cynthia said the project provided 1,000 construction jobs and will generate 1,200 permanent retail jobs and another 1,600 seasonal jobs.

Chicago-based Horizon Group Properties Inc. and Chattanooga, Tennessee-based CBL & Associates Properties Inc. teamed up as developers for the $100 million project.

Laredo's outlet mall opened less than two weeks after another one opened near Corpus Christi.
