PORT ARTHUR – Sam Houston Elementary School officials have broken ground in achieving their plans for a new building and campus.

Construction with include a single-story building with approximately 98,000 sf and hold up to 700 students.

The new building will be located at 3245 36th St. and scheduled to be complete in summer 2018, in time to start the new 2018–2019 school year.

Estimated costs of the new addition to the school is approximately $22 million.

Once the building is completed and the students and staff have been moved into it, the portable buildings will be removed and the old building torn down.

According to the principle of the school, the newly cleared area will be repurposed for much needed teacher and visitor parking.

The school is working with N&T Construction Inc. to build the new addition to the school.
