HOUSTON – Sterling Aviation High School’s new $72 million, 237,000-sf building has lifted off.
It can accommodate about 1,600 to 1,800 students.
The school is home to Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) magnet program for aviation sciences.
The aviation-focused school, at 11625 Martindale south of downtown Houston, opened to students earlier this month.
Sterling is centered around a massive airplane hangar, which is lined with large viewing windows and surrounded by classrooms.
The hangar acts as a learning space where students can work on airplanes and engines.
The school also features state-of-the-art science labs, flexible classroom spaces and several learning commons areas.
Crews are slated to level the original school, just north of the new facility, to create new athletic fields and parking.
The second phase is expected to be completed in third quarter 2017.
