SUGAR LAND – Sugar Land’s population is set to grow by about 34 percent after annexation plans received final approval from Sugar Land City Council.

Annexation of New Territory and Greatwood will add 3,850 acres to the city southwest of Houston and take effect December 12, 2017, according to city council documents.

Sugar Land’s population will increase from 87,367 to more than 117,000 residents.

The city council also approved amending Sugar Land’s fiscal year 2017 budget to begin the pre-annexation work.

Current Sugar Land residents will not see an increase to their costs or taxes nor an impact to their city services due to the annexation.
