AUSTIN-ROUND ROCK – A simple map of median gross rents, according to the Census Bureau's 2014 Five-Year American Community Survey, has been produced.

The map reveals the typical east-west breakdown seen in Austin: high-rent tracts cluster west of Central Austin and MoPac Expressway.

Unlike other recent maps, which show you how various aspects of Austin's rents have changed, this one is a snapshot in time.

The map colors each tract on a sliding scale from blue to red. Blue tracts are where median gross rents are less expensive. Red tracts are where they are more expensive.

Another important note: This map only shows data for the 75 percent of Austin where at least 20 percent of the housing stock is occupied by renters. In other words, if a Census tract is made up of less than 20 percent renters, it's not shown on the map.

For renters and Realtors, the map can be a handy tool to scope out the local rental landscape.
