EL PASO – Downtown’s 104-year-old Camino Real Hotel has been purchased with plans to undergo a $70 million renovation. The hotel will be renamed Hotel Paso del Norte, its original name.

The 356-room hotel at 101 S. El Paso St. is across the St. from the El Paso convention center.

The hotel is appraised for tax purposes at $7.1 million by the El Paso Central Appraisal District.

Renovations are expected to begin in February 2016 and take 18 months to complete.

Plans call for renovating all 356 of the Camino Real’s rooms, second-floor ballroom and meeting rooms, the ground-floor lobby, the hotel’s restaurants, and the Dome Bar.

The tenth floor ballroom and terrace, which is currently housing the hotel’s mechanical equipment, is to be restored and will include a full-service spa, gym, and swimming pool, the Meyers Group reported.
