DALLAS – After buying the Dallas Municipal Courts building for $1, the University of North Texas System plans to begin a $56 million renovation of the historic property into the home of the UNT Dallas College of Law.
UNT signed an interlocal agreement with the City of Dallas to acquire the former Dallas Municipal Courts building—made infamous by the shooting of accused John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald—for a one-time sale price of $1, with an annual lease of $10 for the next 99 years.
Last year, the City of Dallas began construction on the building with the help of a $14 million city bond set aside years ago to help provide a home for a public law school.
As of 2015, 272 students were enrolled in the law school program, with 221 student offers of acceptance.
Construction is expected to start on the Dallas Municipal Courts building renovations in January, with completion slated for spring 2019.
Law school students could expect to begin their 2019 fall academic careers at the new UNT Dallas College of Law’s home.
