McALLEN – Tres Lagos, the 2,500-acre mega community in north McAllen, is moving along.

The mega community in north McAllen broke ground in March 2016 and is set to have its grand opening on July 3, 2017.

The overall community plan includes:

  • Edinburg school district campuses
  • an IDEA school
  • 5,000 single-family homes, 1,000 townhomes, 2,000 multifamily homes
  • a 90-acre technology park to attract new companies
  • more than 200 acres of parks and 20 miles of trails
  • more than 1.5 million sf of commercial retail

Tres Lagos will also serve as the new home to an extension of the Texas A&M College Station campus, overseen by President Michael Young.

Texas A&M University officials are hoping to break ground on the 60,000-sf Texas A&M-McAllen campus facility in December 2016.

The IDEA school, projected to open August 2017, has broken ground in the community. Gold’s Gym, Tru Fit and Crunch are bidding to be the big gym across from the Texas A&M campus, according to Mike Rhodes, the developer.

Rhodes said ten homes have sold so far. Rhodes’ goal is to have 100 homes sold by the grand opening. Construction on residences will likely begin in spring 2017.
