AUSTIN - Lions Municipal Golf Course in West Austin has joined the list of one of the 'most endangered historic places' in the U.S., according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

As such, a Marker Dedication Ceremony will be held October 22, 2016 with World Golf Hall of Famer Ben Crenshaw among the scheduled speakers.

Lions Municipal Golf Course, affectionately called “Muny” and “Old Muni,” covers about 140 acres of a 500-acre tract that the University of Texas owns north of the Colorado River between Lady Bird Lake and Lake Austin.

Lions Municipal Golf Course is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but that doesn’t eliminate the possibility that the property could be redeveloped when UT’s lease with the city expires in 2019.

“The course’s future hinges on a longer-term lease agreement between the city and the university,” the National Trust for Historic Preservation states. “Without it, Muny cannot continue to highlight an important chapter of the American story.”
