HOUSTON – A nonprofit Houston animal protection agency has raised $20.6 million for phase one of a major expansion, which has a total price tag of $27 million.
The Houston SPCA has started construction on three buildings that total more than 100,000 sf at its campus at 7007 Old Katy Rd., just north of Memorial Park.
The project stretches across 12 acres and construction is expected to be completed in early 2018.
The expansion includes: A 55,000-sf pet adoption center and native wildlife center, a multipurpose arena for demonstrations and rescue work, a 20,000-sf education center with three classrooms, and a 13-apartment dormitory veterinary student residence for fourth-year Texas A&M Veterinary students.
Following the completion of Phase 1, Phase 2 will begin, which includes the renovation and conversion of the current adoption center at 900 Portway Dr. into a state-of-the-art animal hospital and rehabilitation center.
